The wave that gives Hossegor its reputation, and one of the heaviest, most technical beach breaks in the world. La Gravière sits directly off a deep offshore canyon that funnels swell energy straight onto the sandbank, producing thick, hollow, world-class barrels that regularly host the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro tour stops.
The power here is genuinely different from an ordinary beach break: waves jack up suddenly in surprisingly shallow water and unload with real force, rewarding late, committed takeoffs and punishing hesitation. It's a wave built for high-performance surfing and tube-riding, not a place to find your feet.
This is advanced-to-pro territory when there's any real swell, with a fiercely competitive lineup on a good day. Come to watch the pros during contest season if you're not ready for it yourself, and treat any swell over head-high with serious respect.

A short walk north of La Gravière, and just as capable of firing world-class barrels when the bank is right. La Nord breaks over its own stretch of the same deep-canyon-fed sandbar system, throwing hollow, powerful peaks that rival its more famous neighbour on the right day.
Because it's slightly less crowded than La Gravière, locals often prefer it when both are working, chasing whichever peak has the better shape that day. The wave itself is every bit as heavy: fast, thick and demanding of a confident, committed approach to the takeoff.
Come prepared for genuine power once there's any swell size, this is not a forgiving beach break. Check both La Gravière and La Nord before committing to one, the better bank shifts through the season, and a short walk can make all the difference.

A slightly more approachable option in the heart of Hossegor's beach-break strip, sitting between the area's heavier, more famous peaks. La Centrale still carries real Hossegor power, but tends to be a touch more forgiving and workable than La Gravière at its most intense.
It benefits from the same deep-canyon swell focusing that defines this whole stretch of coast, so it still produces genuinely good, hollow waves on a clean swell, just with slightly more margin for error than its neighbours. This makes it a sensible choice for strong intermediates wanting a taste of Hossegor's quality without the full commitment.
Come on a clean groundswell with light wind, expect a solid local and visiting crowd on any good day, and use it as a stepping stone toward the heavier peaks once you've found your footing in these powerful French beach breaks.
