Locally nicknamed "Vietnam," Praia da Vitória's long sandy beach is Terceira's most accessible and reliable wave, sitting right by the town and old US military harbour that first brought surfing to the island in the 1950s. It's a wide, open beach break with plenty of room to spread out.

The beach catches swell from a broad window and, being sand-bottomed, is far more forgiving than the sharp volcanic reefs found around most of the rest of the island, making it the natural starting point for anyone new to Terceira's surf. Conditions shift with the sandbanks, so it's worth checking a few sections before settling in.

Come on a small-to-moderate swell for the easiest conditions, and use it as a base to explore the heavier reef breaks further down Terceira's east coast once you've found your footing. A relaxed, welcoming wave in a town with genuine surf history behind it.

A gnarly, offshore bombora reef that magnifies and bends incoming swell into super-heavy, thick, fast, barrelling rights, one of Terceira's most serious and respected waves. Santa Catarina sits offshore from the rest of the island's more accessible breaks, handling far more size than it looks like from the water and demanding real experience to even consider paddling out.

It only truly comes alive on a solid swell, and when it does, it produces genuinely world-class barrel sections that draw the island's small, tight-knit crew of specialists. The takeoff zone is tight and the consequences of misjudging it are serious, given the exposed, offshore position and the power involved.

This is expert-only water, best watched and learned from locals before any consideration of paddling out. Basalt rocks nearby are ultra-sharp, and occasional shark sightings have been reported in the area, respect this wave and the crew who've earned the right to ride it.

A powerful, challenging left off deepwater reef on Terceira's north coast, holding a long lefthand pointbreak that can run hard and fast when swell wraps in correctly. Quatro Ribeiras needs the right NW-N direction and offers real length when it lines up.

The wave demands respect for its power and the deep water close to the reef. Come on a well-aligned swell, and treat it as one of Terceira's more serious, committed options for experienced surfers.

A small east-coast village with an easy, workable right point breaking in front, giving a more accessible option than Terceira's heavier offshore reefs. Porto Martins picks up W-NE swell and holds a manageable, friendlier wave for the island's less extreme conditions.

The village setting is quiet and low-key, well away from the tourist crowds around Angra do Heroísmo. Come on a clean swell for a satisfying, approachable Terceira session without the commitment of the island's serious slabs.
